Pedestrianisation of cities is an increasingly popular initiative in Europe, to remove cars from the road, returning public space to pedestrians. Underground parking is created on the outskirts and former city surface car parks are turned into public parks, landscaped with plants, playgrounds, gathering space and fountains, improving air quality and reducing noise pollution. There are car-free street networks of promenades with shops and restaurants that are open long into the evening hours.
