Vasco da Gama was born in Sines circa 1460 and was the first European to reach India by sea. His initial voyage to India, by way of the Cape of Good Hope, was the first to link Europe and Asia by an ocean route and the distances covered in the outward and return voyages made this expedition the longest ocean voyage ever made until then.

The port of Sines is an open deep water port and largest, in terms of volumes of cargo handled, in Portugal. It is the country’s leading energetic supplier (crude, refined products and natural gas) and able to receive the main players of port, maritime, industrial and logistic sectors.

The Seven Hanging Valleys scenic trail runs along the coastal cliffs from Praia da Marinha in the east to Praia de Vale Centeanes in the west.

The rock cliffs were formed by layer upon layer of sand and silt and shells can be found high up on the cliffs. Millions of years ago this land used to be under a shallow ocean
