Holsten Gate

Most significant town gate of the late Middle Ages in Germany and trademark of the city. Constructed between 1464 and 1478 by the counsil’s architect Hinrich Helmstede following the example of Flandric bridge gates. Former middle gate in a complex of four town gates. Reconstructed between 1863 and 1871 and between 1933 and 1934. house the museum of municipal history.

Lubeck Cathedral

Lubeck Dom was started in 1173 by Henry the Lion as a cathedral for the Bishop of Lubeck. It was parly destroyed in a bombing raid in WWll (1942) and the Arp Schnitiger organ was destroyed by fire. A large portion of the internal fittings was saved, including the cross and almost all of the medieval polyptychs. Reconstruction of the cathedral took several decades and work was completed only in 1982.

Hospital of The Holy Spirit

One of the oldest social institutions and hospitals of the Middle Ages with Church, large hospital hall and cloisters around a small inner yard to serve ‘people of lesser luck’. Construction started in the 1260’s and has been enlarged and modified serveral times.

Entrance to Lubeck and the Customs Collector’s House

Built in 1571. Terra cotta frieze with the Lubeck and Mecklenburg coast of arms. 1912-1928 house of the novel writer Ida Boy-Ed.
